Tips & Tricks
- Fertiliser should have consistent characteristics to achieve an even spread, so check it before you put it in the hopper. Fertiliser can degrade with age, old stock versus new stock may need different settings. Blends can segregate during spreading and how you store it can have a bearing on the quality; we advise you to stack fertilisers no more than three bags high to prevent this.
- Apply nutrients to your crops when they are most in need of them. Research has demonstrated that crops gain from a Spring application since that is when their need for these important nutrients peaks, ensuring a healthy start for your crops.
- Pay attention to the weather! Your spread pattern may be affected by strong winds. Don't spread if it's too windy to spread! Watch the humidity levels as well. Fertiliser can absorb moisture on a wet day, which can alter flow rates. Sulfur products will accumulate on the vanes more quickly in damp or humid conditions than in dry ones.
Spreader maintenance
- Because it will affect your spread pattern, regularly inspect your spreader for wear and tear. When necessary, replace parts and heed the manufacturer's maintenance recommendations.
- Verify that the PTO shaft and the read-out on your tractor's screen match. Your spreader isn't running at the PTO speed you believe it should be because the readout is frequently different.
- Clean the spreader regularly, both during and after use.
- When you refill your hopper, pay close attention to and clean the spreader vanes each time. This is particularly crucial when applying fertilisers that contain sulfur. It is well known that sulfur fertilisers leave deposits on the spreader vanes over time. These deposits can build up or cause blockages, which will result in uneven spreading.
Get your settings right
The physical characteristics of the fertiliser dictate the proper spreading machine setting. The setting is especially influenced by the flow rate, bulk density, and particle size distribution.
Why it’s important to calibrate fertiliser spreaders
Calibrating your fertiliser spreader is important for both economical and environmental reasons. Calibrating a fertiliser spreader does not have to be hard or difficult, to make it easy we've created a helpful calculator that will tell you what flow rate you need to achieve your desired spread rate.
